IELTS is the In­ter­na­tional Eng­lish Lan­guage Test­ing Sys­tem, the world’s most pop­u­lar Eng­lish lan­guage pro­fi­ciency test for higher ed­u­ca­tion and global mi­gra­tion

IELTS was one of the pi­o­neers of four skills Eng­lish lan­guage test­ing over 21 years ago, and con­tin­ues to set the stan­dard for Eng­lish lan­guage test­ing to­day.

Over 9,000 or­ga­ni­za­tions around the world trust and rec­og­nize IELTS as a se­cure, valid and re­li­able in­di­ca­tor of true-to-life abil­ity to com­mu­ni­cate in Eng­lish for ed­u­ca­tion, im­mi­gra­tion and pro­fes­sional ac­cred­i­ta­tion.

More than 2 mil­lion IELTS tests were taken in the last year and IELTS ex­am­i­na­tion ser­vices are pro­vided through more than 800 test cen­ters and lo­ca­tions in over 140 coun­tries.

IELTS has two types:

  1. Academic : This type of test can be taken on a computer or a test paper with the help of online platforms, or in a private space with strong internet access.
  2. General : This type of test can be only taken in the test centre on a computer or a test paper. 

 

Professional Practice Test

In an official IELTS test, there are several stages to cross. They are:

  1. Listening
  2. Reading
  3. Writing
  4. Speaking

Listening

You will be provided with four recordings to test your listening skills.

  • Recording 1 – a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context.
  • Recording 2 – a monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local facilities.
  • Recording 3 – a conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment.
  • Recording 4 – a monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture.

40 questions will be provided each weighing 1 mark, which need to be solved in 30 minutes of time. Recordings will be played only once having different accents. Extra 10 minutes will be privileged for you to transfer your answers from your question booklet to your answer sheet. Poor spelling and grammar will be penalized. 

Reading

This section is included in the test for widening the reading skills of understanding the gist, readers’ idea for details, skimming writers’ opinions, attitudes and purpose for the writings. 

The test consists of 40 questions each weighing 1 mark. The questions need to be solved within 60 minutes. This section has 3 long descriptive texts having analytical and discursive facts too. The sources are books, magazines and newspapers

No extra time is given for answering the questions. Time given should be considered carefully by the exam takes. Spelling and grammar errors will not be marked. 

Writing

Test takers are examined on the basis of their writing proficiency on variegated topics with general interests and topics suitable for entering undergraduate and postgraduate studies. 

 

Two tasks will be provided:

  • Task 1 –  A graphical, tabular, chart or diagrammatic representation will be presented to summarise or explicate the information. Test takers need to be writing 150 words in about 20 minutes to meet the deadline of provided time.
  • Task 2 – Essay needs to be written with a certain and strong point of view and explanations on the given topic in a formal style. Almost 250 words need to be written in about 40 minutes. 

 

60 minutes of time is declared for the tasks with 2 questions. Both tasks need to be completed in the declared time. Bullets are not acceptable in the answers. Answers should be given on the answer sheet and must be written in full. Writing on the question papers will not be examined by the examiner.

Speaking

A certified examiner will be taking the speaking test with an interactive encounter to real life situations. 

 

Along the duration of 11-14 minutes, you will be providing the conscience of your experiences and perception about different real life situations and incidents. 

Examiner will be introducing you to various parts of the test as mentioned below:

  • Part 1 –  A general introduction session will be conducted to familiarize you with the test and excel your fear and nervousness. It will be lengthened to almost 4-5 minutes. 
  • Part 2  –  The examiner will provide you a card and will learn about your perception on the particular topic. A short preparation time of a minute or two will be provided to the test taker. One or two questions on the same topic will be asked further. 
  • Part 3 – Further questions on the topic in part 2 will be asked. It lasts from 4 to 5 minutes. 

 

Markings will be done on the basis of fluency, grammatical errors, lexical resources, pronunciation and coherence.
